Holy land 13/50: Kidron Valley (where Jesus crossed the valley traveling between Jerusalem and Bethany)

Spread the love

Kidron Valley

The Kidron Valley runs from north to south between the Mount of Olives and the eastern wall of the Temple Mount and the City of David.

The Kidron Valley is the Hebrew “Kid’ron,” meaning “dusky, gloomy,” and in Greek, Kedron, “Cedron” in John 18:1, “When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it”

After visiting Garden of Gethsemane and Church of All Nations, we walked across the Kidron Valley, which connected us from the base of Mount of Olives to City of David.

Jesus crosses the Kidron Valley

Kidron Valley is the place where Jesus went through after finishing the Last Supper with his disciples in Jerusalem and went to Mount of Olives.
En route, Jesus tells the disciples that he will rise from the dead and go ahead of them to Galilee. He also predicts that, before the morning, Peter will deny knowing him three times.

Mark 14:26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Biblical References on Kidron Valley

There are so many references of Kidron Valley in The Bible:

1. It was in this valley where King Jehoshaphat is thought to have overthrown the enemies of Israel:

2 Chronicles 20:26 (NIV)

On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Berakah, where they praised the Lord. This is why it is called the Valley of Berakah to this day.

2. King David fled through the Kidron Valley during the rebellion of Absalom

2 Samuel 15:23 (NIV)
The whole countryside wept aloud as all the people passed by. The king also crossed the Kidron Valley, and all the people moved on toward the wilderness.

3. 2 Chronicles 29-31 cover King Hezekiah’s call for the sanctification of the ministers of the Lord, the purification of unclean things, an invitation to all Israel and Judah to celebrate Passover in Jerusalem, and liturgical reforms. During the reforms of King Hezekiah around 700 BCE, as part of the ritual cleaning of the Temple, the priests removed the unclean items from the inner part of the Temple to the courts, and the Levites carried the unclean items to Wadi Kidron

2 Chronicles 29:16 (NIV)
The priests went into the sanctuary of the Lord to purify it. They brought out to the courtyard of the Lord’s temple everything unclean that they found in the temple of the Lord. The Levites took it and carried it out to the Kidron Valley.
